HMG Powder Coatings proudly hosted a Christmas Jumper Day on Thursday, December 5th, bringing cheer to the workplace while supporting an important cause. Staff members were encouraged to wear their favorite Christmas jumpers, transforming the office into a colourful celebration of the festive season. This year, the event supported the Alzheimer’s Society, a charity dedicated to improving the lives of those affected by dementia. The organisation was selected through a nomination process, where employees submitted causes that held personal significance to them. From these submissions, three charities were shortlisted, and the final choice was made at random. Stephen Duffy, Operations Director, expressed his pride in the team’s participation, saying: "It’s heartening to see our staff come together for a day of fun while contributing to such a deserving cause. HMG are delighted to announce a range of products that meet the requirements of the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) Regulation. The aim of the directive is to increase marine safety and reduce the risk of marine pollution.

The “Ships Wheel”, or “Wheelmark” as it is officially called, is an accreditation that is required for equipment placed on board ships for which safety certificates are issued by, or on behalf of, Member States of the European Union.

The Wheelmark is granted once a product has been demonstrated to meet the safety at sea requirements as stipulated by the Marine Equipment Directive. It is the “flag administration” of the Member State that has the authority for issuing certification - in the UK, this is the MCA.

Countries within the European Union have one or more nominated “Notified Bodies” which carry out the work to demonstrate that equipment placed on board ships meets safety at sea requirements. Products which they approve for use are required to use the Wheelmark, which must be affixed directly to the product or to its packaging.

Directive 2014/90/EU stipulates that marine equipment to be installed on new or existing ships shall be approved and bear the MED / MER mark of accreditation, known as ‘Wheelmark’

European Union’s Marine Equipment Directive (MED)

UK’s Marine Equipment Regulations (MER)

Approval to these also confers approval by the US Coast Guard (USCG). Our manufacturing site in Belfast, Northern Ireland has been audited by approved Notifying Body, Exova - WarringtonFire.

All products are released, as Wheelmark approved under a covering statement and certificate issued by individual batch and product.

HMG have long supplied their Qualicoat-approved polyester powder coatings for use in the construction industry and architectural markets. Fire resistance testing has moved on over the years, and the latest EU and UK regulations require that only non-combustible materials may be used for exterior wall systems, particularly buildings including apartment blocks, care homes and student accommodation over 18m in height (11m in Scotland and Wales). 

The reaction to fire of a material is categorised according to EN 13501-1, and only those achieving Class A1, or Class A2-s1,d0 are considered suitable for relevant architectural buildings. Because of practical limitations in the use of powder coatings, most particuarly the requirement for a minimum dry film thickness for architectural powder coatings above 60 microns, Class A1 almost certainly cannot be achieved, leaving the highest fire rating for a coating as Class A2-s1, d0. 

A recent testing regime, carried out by WarringtonFire, has confirmed that all HMG’s polyester coatings meet this standard. 

“Having our entire polyester range formally tested and approved gives specifiers the freedom to express their designs and choose from the extensive range of finishes and colours available from the stocked range, or from our tailor-made solutions.” explained Robert McIlorum, Sales Manager at HMG Powder Coatings Ltd.

HMG announce new measures to ensure continued supply to UK and Ireland essential services

On 23rd March, the UK Government imposed new rules on social distancing to protect the health care system, most notably that we should stay at home, except for very limited purposes. Travelling to and from work is one of those purposes allowed, but only where this absolutely cannot be done from home.

Last week we adopted a suite of biosecurity measures for our staff, imposed a business travel and visitor ban, and authorised several staff to work from home.

We believe now that we must go further. We have a duty of care to our employees and a social responsibility to help mitigate the effect of the 2019-nCoV on our NHS, and that means allowing fewer interpersonal contacts by reducing staff numbers in the factory, even if that temporarily diminishes the high quality of service you are accustomed to.

Therefore, with immediate effect, we are:

• Closing the research & development facility;
• Closing our colour matching lab;
• Closing our Application Centre;
• Reducing our manufacturing capacity;
• Reducing our office staff;
• Utilizing the UK Government’s Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme to temporarily lay off staff and retain the ability of rapidly returning to full capacity;
• Authorising technical staff to work from home: if you have an enquiry, contact them at support@hmgpowders.co.uk;
• Imposing a noon cut-off for orders required despatched same day;
• Closing our doors to the public.

We will be open for deliveries but ask that suppliers advise when goods will be delivered.

We understand that we are part of a complicated supply chain, and that our coatings are being used in essential services. Corrosion is the natural process in which a metal is eaten away and changed by chemical and/or electrochemical action from exposure to the environment. When the substrate is steel, corrosion is usually referred to as rusting and it is formation of iron oxides in the presence of oxygen, water, salt and other chemicals such as acids that may accelerate the process.

Rusting leads to huge costs for the end user if the steel is not suitably protected. Poor protection leads to more frequent maintenance, repair and replacement.

HMG Powder Coatings officially opens its Training Facility at the Tamworth Distribution site. This is the final stage of a significant investment plan at Tamworth, and part of a wider ongoing investment across all aspects of the business.

The installation of a full Application & Development Centre with a 2-metre gas oven and a 3-metre spray booth complete with Styling Studio and Training Centre is almost unique in the industry. HMG Powder Coatings are now equipped with ground breaking facilities and highly dedicated personnel to offer the very highest levels of technical service and training.

The training is split into 3 modules and aimed at differing levels within the industry as follows
• Introduction Application of powder with basic chemistry of coatings knowledge
• Intermediate Advanced Chemistry of Coatings & Maintenance of Equipment
• Advanced Application and Quality Control of powder coatings

A key function in the roll out of the Training Facility is that HMG Powder Coatings can offer the small to medium business sector in the powder coating industry an opportunity to  acquire or update skills in the application of powder coatings.

ISO Quality and Environmental Management standards have been revised and HMG are delighted to announce their continued accreditation.

The International Standards Organisation (ISO) adopted new revisions to the well-known 9001 and 14001 management standards in September 2015, giving organisations a three-year transition period in which to adopt the new requirements.  They are constructed around the seven principles of customer focus, leadership, engagement, process approach, improvement, evidence-based decision making and relationship management.

HMG first achieved accreditation to the quality management system in 1996 and to the environmental management system in 2000, becoming the first powder coating manufacturer worldwide to do so.  Since those times, the standards have changed dramatically from prescriptive descriptions of operations to focus on continual improvement of the business processes, bringing the standards in line with the well-established ethos of the Company.

HMG Powder Coatings Ltd has recently recruited Mark Prince into the Technical Department in the role of Technical Service to support new and existing business.

Mark has a background in powder coating research and development and technical service. He has developed coating technology for market leaders and assisted coaters in all aspects of powder coating application from blasting, pre-treatment in both manual and automatic powder coating application. Mark is a university graduate he studied at Coventry University and earning a Bachelors degree in Materials Technology.

Mark will focus on providing his technical knowledge to support to our customers, offering product and application solutions.

“I am excited to have joined HMG’s technical team based in Tamworth with a close link to the technical centre in Belfast. I am looking forward to assisting HMG customers out in the field and also in the new HMG Training and Application Centre in Tamworth”.

The Anodic Finish - Classic Collection is a range of elegant colours available ex Stock from HMG. The colours have been designed to compliment the EURAS anodised colour range and can be used as an attractive alternative to anodising, or for achieving an anodised appearance on non aluminium substrates such as steel.

As the Anodic Finish – Classic collection range complies with Qualicoat Class 1 (P-1347), the products may be used for architectural purposes, or may be used purely for decorative applications to achieve a classic style finish.

Belfast based HMG Powder Coatings Ltd has recently recruited Thomas Parkins as a Assistant Technical Manager to support & accelerate the expansion plans of the business with new products and markets.

Thomas has a background in Chemistry, studying it at Queen’s University Belfast and earning a Bachelors degree with first class honours plus a Masters degree. Here he gained experience in a wide range of topics and skills in researching cutting edge technologies.

Having joined the Technical Department as Assistant Technical Manager, Thomas will use these skills to research and develop new products with high performance and quality for wide reaching and previously unexplored applications. He will also provide technical knowledge and support to our customers, offering product and application solutions.

Belfast based HMG Powder Coatings Ltd has recently recruited Conor McHugh as a Sales Representative to bolster the expanding team in the Republic of Ireland.

With a wealth of experience in the paint, powder and coatings market, Conor will bring professional and knowledgeable onsite support to customers from across the region.
